As a note: if your character is from Radz-at-Han I give you full permission to recognize Amal, as he was somewhat infamous about 5+ years ago for petty theft and scamming rich people. (After helping the Scions with the apocalypse, however, his record has been expunged and he is a free man, much to his surprise.)

This page has a lot on it because I'm an artist, sorry!

personality

I could write out a personality but I feel that shitposts really cover everything here.
history
Born in Radz-at-Han to a merchant's daughter and a very enthusiastic Hyuran adventurer, Amal was nevertheless consigned to a life of difficulties. He was abandoned soon after birth-- his father having run off, and his mother embarrassed by a child out of wedlock-- and taken in by the local orphanage. As these things go, times were incredibly difficult for the orphanage and he never quite felt like he belonged. He fell in with a crowd who didn't care about his heritage, and they taught him how to steal enough to survive, and then how to fight. His childhood thus troubled, he was caught and punished several times up through adulthood for petty theft and scamming people out of money. With every scar he earned from their ire, he got a new tattoo. The targets of his thievery were always the same: wealthy people, and those who seemingly deserved to be taken down a peg. And when he could, he gave to the other hungry kids in the slummy parts of the city he grew up in. When the Calamity hit he was seventeen and in chains, which would end up being a sort of reoccurring theme, unfortunately. The turning point for Amal was a rough stay in a jail cell followed by a grueling couple of years on Radz-at-Han's infamous "pleasure barges". His disobedient nature refused to dim no matter how much he was punished, and he was traded between several high-profile barge owners until he was able to escape. The whipping scars on his back, though covered by a tree tattoo later, were difficult to miss... which was why he generally kept them covered afterward. After that experience, he decided that stealing wasn't worth nearly dying for it, and began to pursue dancing (and looking attractive) more seriously.Radz-at-Han wasn't a terribly small port city but it was still an island, and Amal's reputation was unshakably that of a thief and ne'er-do-well by the time he hit adulthood. This penchant for trouble would earn him several misadventures in taverns during his youth and even as an adult. His passion for music and adventure and freedom only served to make him seem more like a burden than a virtuous thief, even when he had had enough and tried to earn a living the right way. He needed a new start... and Eorzea after the Calamity was a good place to do that.Amal wasn't looking for attachments, exactly. Living life constantly on the move made it difficult for him to make friends, let alone keep them. And it was safer that way, too, if he just helped people anonymously and vanished back into the night, as some kind of atonement for all the hurting he'd done to others over the years. That was how he made his start in Eorzea, attributing the headaches and visions and weird voices to aether sickness-- until he was told the truth.
differences for general rp
For general RP purposes, Amal is just an adventurer with a weaker version of the Echo and a talent for 'hearing' the elementals. Occasionally seen with the Scions, he works under Riol when it comes to matters of world peace and sneaks for various interests otherwise. As a note, I will never use the Echo on your character without permission and I am happy RPing without sepia-toned flashback godmoding.
hooks
- Amal spends a lot of time working as a loosely-affiliated arm of the Sisters of the Edelweiss, a position that occasionally has him lending support to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn (due to his Echo ability). He's never met the WoL personally and doesn't care to know them since they can't be bothered with the smaller problems.
- Though he's an informant and often a spy, he's firmly on the side of "good". He believes that heroes can't win a rigged game so people like him need to be around to get their hands dirty.
- In a funny twist of fate, this peasant has been known to do shadow work for the Sultana's allies in order to reclaim lost property and subvert the Monetarists. He doesn't do it out of any loyalty to the country, but because he hates seeing people like Lolorito run rampant without consequences.
- One of his more common identities includes posing as a merchant prince from Radz-at-Han named Charun, with investments in perfume (and some illegal stuff too).
- With some rigorous training in the sword and healing arts, he's decent rescuer material; he'll never walk past someone who is injured or in distress without trying to help.
- Amal hates Gridania. Not just because of racist elves (he hates Ishgard too, if it helps) but because he can hear the damn elementals all the time and he refuses to train with corrupt conjurers. Kyokuho is good people, though.
- A talented dancer and natural singer, Amal is not an unusual sight at a bar-- either listening for information, or taking the stage himself. Rumors that he can strum are not unfounded, but he's far more comfortable with his body as an instrument.
- He has training as a courtesan but no desire to be one. If he's batting his eyelashes and rolling to seduce, he likely has no interest in anything resembling that most elusive of pleasures. (Probably.) Flirting is fun but he also likes being a huge tease.
- Amal's flighty nature makes it difficult to discern between the mask and the man. Some may be inclined to trust a charming rogue with a disarming smile and others might hate him out of principle. It doesn't matter to him. By the time strangers have noticed his tattoos and unexpectedly Elezen ears, he assumes their minds can't be changed.
a thief with a heart of gold
Despite a switch of profession, Amal remains slightly sticky-fingered. As in his youth it is mainly directed toward his enemies, i.e. dead Garleans, and the pompous rich who wouldn't notice their stuff going missing. He considers himself a little bit of a Robin Hood type but there's no pride in it so much as doing the right thing. This has gotten him in trouble with the Syndicate more than once.Amal will never steal from another player character without OOC permission or good reason, though he might conjure a gil coin behind someone's ear for fun and do other sleight of hand tricks because he likes playing the clown.

Please keep in mind the following when interacting with my character:• I'm not new at roleplaying but I haven't done a whole lot of public RP in game. If I make a mistake somewhere, please tell me!
• Amal thinks flirting is good harmless fun and your PCs are welcome to flirt back, but Amal likes to initiate physical contact first, and any Roman hands will be returned accordingly.
• I will not tolerate infomodding, ic/ooc boundaries being violated, or people doing stuff to my character without my consent.
• If you are homophobic or racist, please don't interact.
• If you're an actual minor, please don't interact.
• If you want to rp some bad drama (i.e. our characters fighting, yours harassing mine etc) let's communicate first so we know each others' comfort levels and any consequences can be agreed upon.
• If you're not sure about something, ask!
